Sulfur
- 1 Minute Read
The mineral sulfur is part of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, which are vital for building proteins. It is also part of the powerful antioxidant glutathione. Sulfur-containing compounds found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage have potential anti-cancer properties.
Sulfur is present in foods like meat, eggs, and certain vegetables. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy products provides adequate sulfur.
There are no specific dietary recommendations for sulfur intake in the United States. Sulfur is abundant in many foods, and deficiencies are rare.
Excess sulfur from dietary supplements may cause diarrhea.
Note: Documented sulfur content is quite limited for foods, making it difficult to track total sulfur intake.
