Erucic Acid
- 1 Minute Read
Erucic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid mainly found in certain plant oils, especially rapeseed and mustard oil. It is found in lower amounts in sunflower oil, salmon, grains, and nuts. There is no dietary requirement for erucic acid.
In animal studies, high levels of erucic acid have been associated with adverse effects, including damage to the heart muscle. However, human studies suggest that moderate erucic acid intake poses no significant health risks. Researchers are exploring its potential beneficial effects, such as helping treat heart failure and neurological conditions.
Note: Canola oil is made from low-erucic acid rapeseed varieties. It may contain no more than 2% erucic acid to meet safety standards.
